Cable in the Container

<prev | toc | next>

Combining the concepts of Cable in the Cloud with Video in the Container results in a more useful structure for Cable in the Container.

Cable in the Container was briefly mentioned in the discussion on Video in the Container.  Cable in the Container could just mean installing conventional cable infrastructure equipment in a container.  Conventional cable infrastructure defines a fixed partitioning among the various cable services and the rf communications spectrum allocated to those services.  Thus, conventional cable in the container provides some of the benefits of containerized computing, but because conventional cable equipment is highly partitioned functionally, conventional cable in the container does not offer flexibility in allocation of services and spectrum that is sought by the cable industry.

Properly architected, Cable in the Container could provide a unified environment that offered inherent elasticity and flexibility to support all cable services, including: switched digital video, video on demand, network DVR, internet video, targeted advertising, telephone, surveillance, and other internet services.

This then raises the question of what is the difference between Cable in the Container and Video in the Container (or for that matter, between Cable in the Cloud and Video in the Cloud).  Do they eventually become the same thing?  I think so.
