In late July, Gartner released its 2009 Hype Cycle series of research reports.  Gardner now places Cloud Computing at the peak of the Hype Cycle, along with E-book readers.  Quoting from the Gartner special report:

Cloud computing is the latest super-hyped concept in IT. Although cloud computing is about a very simple idea — consuming and/or delivering services from “the cloud,” there are many issues regarding types of cloud computing and scope of deployment that make the details not nearly so simple. In other words, it is a subject that is ripe for a Gartner Hype Cycle.”

For a brief introduction to Gartner’s approach to Hype Cycles, see also the Wikipedia article on Hype Cycle.

Though the earlier post on Cloud Computing in the Phase of Hype was based on personal analysis and not on Gartner’s work on Hype Cycles, the overall orientation and conclusions are largely the same.  The general notion of hype is probably centuries old, and long predates Gartner’s notion of hype cycles.
